STH071sa: St Helena
1911 wmk MCA 1d RED prepared for use but not issued printed in error as a result of a misunderstanding by De La Rue of the request by the Postmaster at St Helena for a supply of 'one penny stamps printed all in red' (by which he intended to refer to the 1902 small keyplate 1d carmine rather than the 1903 large format 1d black & carmine).
According to Marcus Samuel {1976}:
'On arrival the error was discovered and the stock was destroyed. A few copies handstamped SPECIMEN with Type SH2 have survived.'
Over the past 50 years the only example I have seen other than those shown here was in the Marcus Samuel Collection.
The Royal Philatelic Collection includes a plate number block of four that would have been sent by De La Rue direct to Buckingham Palace. These are the only unused examples recorded.
